Saved by Now, Now
I first heard “Yours” by Blaine-based band Now, Now on The Current (89.3 FM) a few years ago. I was immediately pulled in by its atmospheric synthesizers, driving bass, and sultry vocals. In some ways, it’s a typical synth pop song about desire, but it’s well done and catchy. As it turns out, “Yours” was a single release in anticipation of the band’s then-new album Saved (2018).
Themes of love, desire, angst, and redemption permeate the album. If you like synth pop à la CHVRCHES, you may well enjoy Saved. It has a similar vibe in terms of production values and lyrical sensibilities but is more mellow and contemplative. This is an album to which you drive through the night, staring ahead as the reflections of the streetlights pass over your windshield – indeed, there are references to ruminating while driving on multiple tracks.
I don’t feel that there’s a bad track on the album, but standouts for me are “Yours”, “SGL”, “AZ”, “Window”, “Holy Water”, and “P0WDER.”
